Hiroshige designed more than six hundred woodblock prints of flowers and (or) birds, mostly during the 1830s and 1840s. These prints were intended to entertain their purchasers by stimulating their senses. Therefore, birds with colorful plumage were typically paired with equally colorful flowers and a poem about one or both of the picture’s subjects was often added was well.
